CHAPTER TEN

KAILA MOFFETT

“All of a sudden, you think you’re too good to come to work these days? You already took last week off, and now look at you. On the day you’re supposed to return to the office, you’re not even here on time. You are such a disgrace, Kaila Moffett, and I hope they fire your ugly, black, fat neck, ham hock built ass the moment you walk through the door!” Caroline’s voice echoed through the small office as I played the voice message for my direct supervisor. This wasn’t the first time I’d reported Caroline’s harassment and sinister ways, but this was the first time that I had solid proof of the fuckery she had been keeping up.

Over the last few months, her behavior had gotten more unhinged, and now it seemed that she had lost all her fucking marbles, leaving me that damn voice message. I was pulling into the parking lot when she repeatedly called my phone. I didn’t answer because I knew I’d be walking in shortly. Maybe she thought she ended the call before leaving the message, but after listening to it, everyone in the room knew it was intentional.

“I know that you all have to go through your procedures and protocols, but I’m letting you know now that I refuse to continue working with her under these conditions. There are underlying issues for which only she has the answers. I love my job, but my peace and sanity come before all else.” I grabbed my phone off Andrew’s desk.

“We are going to get this resolved, Kaila. I sincerely apologize that you have been dealing with this, and I wish we could’ve handled this sooner.”

“Me too, but I appreciate you wanting a resolution. Do you need anything else from me? I did email you a copy, and I included HR in the email.”

“Okay. I am approving you to work from home for the remainder of the week. We will keep you in the loop as to the outcome of this unfortunate situation. Again, my sincerest apologies for not handling this before it reached this point. Let me walk you to your car.”

“That’s okay. I need a few things from my desk, so I’ll be able to work at home. I’m sure I’ll be okay.” I half-smiled before excusing myself.

Caroline’s face was the first one I saw when the elevator doors opened on the first floor. She was standing there as if she was waiting specifically for me.

“Did you go and run your fat ass lips to those white people upstairs?” Her raspy whisper was like nails against a chalkboard in my ears.

“I will never understand your reason for fucking with me outside of you being old, grumpy, and miserable, but you got it, Caroline. I wish you all the best,” I spoke as I made my way to my cubicle, not bothering to turn back to see if she was following me.

“Miserable? Little girl, I’ve been on this earth twice as long as you’ve been alive.
